AFG 4.0AR Recumbent Exercise Bike Review

The most obvious feature of the AFG 4.0AR recumbent is the side mounted console but there is quite a bit more to this recumbent bike than the AFG 4.0AR Recumbent Exercise Bikeinnovative console design.

The heart rate monitors (both grip and Polar chest strap), special heartrate software in the console, workout tracking programs and higher seat for easier mounting and dismounting are a few of the additional the features that come to mind first.

I had a great opportunity to review this fitness bike, in detail, with the exercise bike product specialist at Johnson Health Tech in Madison Wisconsin (the maker of AFG (Advanced Fitness Group) products).

This bike falls under the "specialty" group at Johnson as apposed to the retail sporting goods category. The materials and components are close to commercial grade and the warranty blows away most other stationary bikes in this category (just compare the AFG warranties to the comparable Schwinn products).

Note: The AFG 4.0AR is no longer available from this site or no longer for sale online.

Please see our Exercise Bike Ratings page for a full listing of the exercise bikes that are available with prices and ratings.

(was selling for $999,99 indirectly from Amazon).

Key Features of the AFG 4.0AR Recumbent

AFG4AR Side Mount Console

The key feature of this bike is the Side Mounted Console (highlighted in the photo) but there are a number of other major features, in addition to its overall quality and excellent warranties, that should also be noted such as:

  • The Higher Seat for easer mounting and dismounting (in addition to the option to adjust the seat farther back than on most other recumbent bikes).
  • The easily adjustable Ratcheting Pedal Clips.
  • The 20 Resistance levels that allow for very accurate adjustments and provide a good resistance at the higher levels for a better workout.
  • The internal Workout Tracking Software in the console.
  • The high quality, easy to use, Plug In Electronic Console (no batteries to replace constantly).
  • The 325 pound weight limit. Even if you weigh much less this is an indication of how solid this bike is.

About-Bicycles Review

The side console is an excellent feature and the console is out of the way so there is nothing for your knees to hit. The frame stays solid and stable under the a heavy pedaling pace.

I found the AFG 4.0AR to be very comfortable but there is one feature of the bike may or may not work for everyone and that is the upturned handlebars. There is only the one set of handlebars (unlike models that have upper and lower handlebars) and this means that you only have the one position and if that is not a comfortable position for you then you will need to find another recumbent.

The seat is higher (for easier mounting and dismounting), adjusts farther back for taller riders and is fully adjustable for a perfect riding position. It's contoured shape make exercising easier, and speeds recovery time for those with injuries.

With the overall quality of this bike, the excellent warranties and many features I would easily recommend this fitness bike to anyone looking for a quality recumbent in the mid to upper price range.
