Fox River Trail North
The Bridges Before the Town of Algonquin

The long wooden bridge before the town of Algonquin

Continuing north on the Fox River Trail you come to the bridge crossing the Fox River just before crossing Route 31 in Algonquin Illinois. Actually, I believe that this part of the trail might technically be called the Prairie Trail already at this point but there is no break in the trail prior to the Route 31 intersection so I have usually considered that to be the start of the Prairie Trail.

The Fox River as seen from the bridge

This is the view looking at the Fox River over the bike trail bridge railing. This is actually a fairly long wooden bridge. There is also another bridge just after this one that crosses one of the roads. Now, it there were only a bridge at the Route 31 crossing... (below)

NOTE: The photos below were from before the Route 31 construction in Algonquin and this trail has changed quite a bit at this location. See the Link Below for the 2015 view of this intersection.

The biike trail crossing at Route 31 in Algonquin

The crossing at Route 31 where the Fox River Bike trail connects to the Mchenry County Prairie Trail. You cross Route 31 then jog to the right on the sidewalk on the other side of the road. It's not that hard but it is possible to lose the trail here if you are not familiar with where to go (I actually missed it the very first time that I rode this trail).  This is a pretty busy road but fortunately there is a light to help you get to the other side.

The Prairie Trail in Algonquin

After you cross Route 31 and go right on to the sidewalk (shown above) the Mchenry County Prairie Trail branches off to the left (the paved trail in the shade above). Although this is the end of the Fox River Trail North photo tour, this is by no means the end of the trail.

You can easily continue north from here (as I usually do) and ride all the way to Wisconsin if you want to. See the Prairie Trail pages (below) for the continuation of this ride and photo tour. I refer to the trail below simply as the Prairie Trail but it is actually the McHenry County Prairie Trail (that can get confusing because there are a number of trails with "Prairie" in their names in this area).

Here's a photo tour of the Fox River Trail, from Dundee to Algonquin (south to north). These pictures are from mid July (2003) so it's a little harder to see the shady areas...
