Navy Pier and over the Chicago River

Passing thru Navy Pier on the Chicago Lakefront Path

This is a view of the Lakefront Trail just after passing Navy Pier heading south. Navy Pier is pretty congested most of the time (especially at peak times, like warm summer weekends). You start to get away from the crowds a little bit at this point.

Crossing the Chicago River just after Navy Pier

This is where you cross the Chicago River just south of Navy Pier. You actually have to deal with some street crossings here and it can get a little confusing as to where to go. This is one of my least favorite parts of the Lakefront Trail but it is necessary to get to the other side and continue south (and it is worth it).

The Chicago River is below and expressways above

The Chicago River is below and the expressway (Lake Shore Drive, actually) is above and to the right.

Bridge on the Chicago Lakefront Trail

One more bridge to cross. It's nice that they have constructed the bridges and tunnels that this bike path uses but I have heard that the construction costs for some of the ones closest to the city have been astronomical. Still, I wish there were some additional bridges for the streets that you still need to cross.

Passing Columbia Yacht Club

This is just before the Columbia Yacht Club (I didn't join this year :-) )

lakefront path passing by one of the many harbors

This is on the Chicago Lakefront path passing by one of the many harbors on the left. I believe that this is Monroe Harbor at this point. This is very close to Millennium Park (another famous Chicago attraction, where "the bean' is located). If you cross Lake Shore Drive, going east on Monroe St. you will come to Millennium Park.

partial view of the Chicago skyline from the lakefront trail

A partial view of the Chicago skyline as we head south on the lakefront trail. This is just north of the Museum Campus area which includes the Shedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium, the Field Museum and Northerly Island (which used to be Meigs Field airport). The dark building ahead (with the white antennas) is the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower). For you football fans out there, Museum Campus is also where Soldier Field is (home of da Bears!)

Here's a photo tour of the Chicago Lakefront Bike Path, from the north end of the trail, at Hollywood Avenue (just north of Lincoln Park) south to the end of the trail and back.
