The 400 State Trail Headquarters in Reedsburg

This is the 400 State Trail Headquarters (Trail Head) in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Reedsburg is the southeastern end of the trail. The trail heads north and west from here to Elroy where it meets up with the second trail in this trail system, the Elroy-Sparta Trail.

Here's the other side of the 400 State Trail Headquarters building facing the trail and the large parking lot. We rode this trip in the fall and there was plenty of free parking available.

The start of the trail in Reedsburg*

Here's a shot of the 400 trail as you start to head out of Reedsburg. Since this is October, there are a lot of places where you see more leaves than trail (as in the photo above).

Wall painting on building by 400 State Trail*

This is a huge painting on the side of a building in Reedsburg. This is right next to the trail and seems to say a lot about the trail and trail history. The painting says "400 Bike Trail EST 1993" which surprises me since I thought that this bike trail was around before 1993. Is it just art, or is it history?

A view of the Baraboo River from the trail *

As you get out into the country there is a place where the trail passes a major bend in the Baraboo River which is very scenic. We planned our ride for peak fall colors (as much as possible) and there were many places along the trail that we got our wish (although we may have been a little on the late side).

Grasses and the 400 State trail

This is a view of the trail from the high grasses on the side of the trail.

Baraboo River seen from 400 Trail

Here is a colorful view of the Baraboo River as you pass by on the 400 State Trail. The 400 State Trail actually follows the Baraboo River pretty closely the whole way from Reedsburg to Elroy.

The trail also runs near route 33 all the way to Union Center. Then the trail continues north out of Union Center near routes 80 and 82 into Elroy. When I say "near" I mean that the trail goes in the same general direction and is not usually very far from these highways but you are still very much away from them in most places.

Here's the photo tour of the 400 State Trail Bike trail from October, 2011.
