More hills on Fox River Trail

More of the cool and winding ("Hill Heaven") part of the Fox River Trail on our ride traveling from Geneva (north) to Dundee. This section of the trail is just north of South Elgin and has some nice gentle hills.

The Stone Bridge/Tunnel

This is the really cool looking combo bridge and tunnel that goes over part of the river and under the train tracks. This section has been closed off periodically due to the trail being washed out at times (see the photo below)

Cool bridges along the fox river trail

This is the other side of the same bridge / tunnel...

Fox River Trail Tunnel

Here's a close up of how the tunnel looks as you pass through it.

Fox River Trail Washout in Closed Trail secition

This is the section that has been closed periodically due to a SERIOUS Washout on the south side of the bridge. If you go around the "Trail Closed" signs watch out for this part!

Actually I have seen no other reason for this part of the trail to be closed but this part could obviously be dangerous (especially if you don't know what's coming). To me it would make a lot more sense to leave this whole section of the trail open but have huge signs and markers and have the area roped off. Even if they close this part of the trail they should still mark this better since some people will always go through the closed down sections anyway.

Some recumbent rider after passing through the bridge / tunnel described above.

The Illinois Prarie Path and Fox River Trail Intersection

NOTE: This is a very important trail intersection.
This is where the Fox River Trail connects to the Illinois Prairie Path (Elgin Branch). Remember, we are facing south looking at this sign (the photo order is reversed here), so the Illinois Prairie Path goes to the left (west) and the FRT goes to the right (east).

Sign - Fox River Trail and Illinois Prairie Path

My son and I missed this sign as we were returning from Geneva Wis. (going south) and added an extra five miles to our over 100 mile trip before we realized that we were on the wrong path!!! It was getting dark as we blew by and we just missed it.

The Fox River Trail branches to the right here (toward South Elgin) and the Prairie Path branches off to the left.

Here's the Fox River Trail photo tour (south to north) from Geneva, Illinois (heading north) to Dundee Illinois, September 2007.
